Friends: TONIGHT (Friday, 10/21) in Davis, check out the fifth Annual Jazz and Beat Festival!
See what Andy Jones says below:
Dear Friends of Poetry,
The Poetry Night Reading Series and the Cultural Action
Committee of the City of Davis have teamed up to bring you two terrific events
tonight and tomorrow night at the John Natsoulas Gallery: Spoken Word Performer
Ruby Ibarra (tonight), and San Francisco Cultural Icon and author of 12 books
Neeli Cherkovski (tomorrow night, with live jazz, interpretive dance, and other
attractions). Tonight's event starts at 8, and tomorrow's at 6:30 with the
Linda Bair Dance Company.
Ruby Ibarra, a poet and spoken word artist, well known
because her work with SickSpits, is performing tonight at 8PM at the John
Natsoulas Gallery. The event is sponsored by the Poetry Night Reading Series
and will be hosted by Dr. Andy Jones with an open microphone will follow at
9PM. All majors are welcome and encouraged to attend. For more information,
please visit poetryindavis.com. We
are expecting a good-sized crowd tonight.
The fifth Annual Jazz and Beat Festival will be held in
Davis October 21st and 22nd. Enjoy sound immersion,
performance painters, jazz musicians, and of course, poetry performances. Among
the poets to be performing tomorrow night at 7 is Neeli Cherkovski, an
award-winning poet, critic, memoirist, and literary biographer. He has
published twelve books of poetry, is the founder of the San Francisco Poetry
Festival and the Café Arts Month. He will be reading at the John Natsoulas
Gallery at 7PM tomorrow (October 21st). After
Cherkovski, we will award the Jack Kerouac Prizes to local poets who will read
their prize-winning work. Also reading will be past prize-winners, all to live
jazz. You really should come.
The Jazz and Beat Festival runs all Saturday afternoon and
evening with hundreds of performers, including the best college jazz band in
the country (according to DownBeat
Magazine), the Brubeck Institute Jazz Quintet, live poetry, and beatboxer
Butterscotch (see http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=XzKo3_heX_g).
Visit Natsoulas.com for details.
I hope to see you at one of these events!
