Dear Friends and Writers:
As
many of you know, the writing programs at UC Davis Extension, for which I have
served as associate director for the last several years, are being
discontinued. Classes are being offered this fall quarter, and the final
courses will be offered this winter (2012) quarter. To view current
courses and to enroll, visit http://extension.ucdavis.edu/unit/arts_and_humanities/.
With the discontinuation of these programs, I have decided to strike out on my own, with my first private writing workshop!
A Writer's
Notebook Workshop (All Genres)
Join
Kate Asche this fall in an Amherst Writers and Artists (AWA) generative writing
workshop, with a twist: The Writer's Notebook: Craft Essays from Tin House
will be our "textbook" for this 6-week workshop. We’ll spend the
first 30 minutes of each session discussing a brief reading selection to be
read in advance. Then, we'll spend two hours writing new work and sharing our
writing (if we wish), as we respond to prompts related to that week's topic.
Topics will include: place and character; "making a scene;" writing
the sensual; what our mistakes can do for us; and more. Plan to finish this
workshop with your own notebook full of fresh first drafts!
Readings
will be a combination of selections from The Writer’s Notebook (so
you’ll need to buy or borrow your own copy) and, sometimes, an additional short
piece by a published writer, which the facilitator will provide. This workshop
will be facilitated in the AWA method, in which all shared writing is treated
with respect and honor. The focus is on the writing itself, and the writer will
learn what is strong, what is memorable, and what people admire in his/her
first-draft work.
