Friends,
I am posting today to share the disappointing news that UC Davis Extension will discontinue offering the certificate program in Creative Writing and the Specialized Studies Program in Nonfiction Writing after Winter Quarter, 2012, due to declining enrollments.
In a letter to writing program students, UC Davis Extension writes:
“This decision is no reflection on the quality of the writing programs we have offered or the great work and dedication our staff, writing faculty and program advisors have given to these programs. Alas, it reflects more the nature of the challenging economy that we have faced and continue to face.
We plan, however, to offer each required course in each program at least one more time, along with most of the electives, so that you will have the opportunity to continue your studies and complete your program. The last writing courses will be offered in Winter Quarter, 2012. A schedule of the remaining courses is enclosed. For more specific scheduling information and program updates
please consult the UCD Extension website (http://extension.ucdavis.edu/unit/arts_and_humanities/).”
The Tomales Bay Workshops, a joint project between UC Davis Extension and the UC Davis Creative Writing Program, will continue as scheduled in October, 2011, barring unexpected changes in enrollment numbers.
Kate’s Miscellany will continue to provide information about free and low-cost writing events in and around the Davis and Sacramento areas as it transitions into a blog administered privately by me, Kate Asche.
On a personal note, I would like to emphasize my deep commitment to writers and writing in the Sacramento and Davis communities and beyond. Let us look forward to other opportunities to come together to support each other as we read, write, learn, and proudly share our voices.
