The Sacramento Poetry Center will host the American River Review Writers whose work appears in the 2012 Silver Edition of the magazine will read from their work and be available for questions and interviews.
This award-winning literary and fine arts magazine is produced annually by students from ARC’s Art New Media and English Departments. Currently in its twenty-fifth year, the ARR showcases the best student art and literature of the last two years. Please join us in recognizing our talented 2012 poets and writers.
The Sacramento Poetry Center is located at 1719 25th Street, Sacramento. Light refreshments will be served. "I'd like to invite each of you to attend the Editorial Freelancers Association (NorCal chapter) meeting on Monday evening, 11/28 at 7pm. We meet at ThinkHouse Collective at 11th and R in downtown Sacramento. Part of the meeting will be "business" but I think we'll dedicate the first part, from 7-8pm, to talking about WRITING.
Is anyone writing a NaNo (50,000 words in the month of November, for National Novel Writing Month)? I am taking a stab at it. No particular outline, just generating journal contents that I plan to work over for my blog and possibly other creative nonfiction outlets. Hoping to skid off the path into fiction by the end.
I'll be presenting what I learned in The Art of Expressive Writing [class at UC Davis Extension, summer 2011] and during NaNoWriMo, but mostly I'll be asking questions for discussion such as :
1. How does it feel to write with abandon (that is, abandoning your inner editor)?
2. Have you ever written yourself into scary territory and if so, what did you do?
3. What have you discovered about yourself through the expressive writing process?
[for members of the group who are editing professionals:]
4. How does writing make you a better editor?
5. How does editing make you a better writer?
6. How do you combine your creative writing with your business, or are they two separate things?

The most prestigious and highly anticipated spoken word event in the Central Valley is back. The ILL LIST 8: A Poetry Slam Invitational returns to the historic State Theatre Sat., Dec. 10 at 8 PM. This event will feature eight nationally renowned spoken-word artists, many of whom have previously appeared on HBO's Def Poetry Jam. Through three rounds of original poetry, poets will match metaphors and battle rhyme for rhyme on their quest for $1,500 in cash prizes. Randomly selected judges from the audience, using Olympic-style scorecards, will award points to poets based on the strength of their poems and the quality of their performances. Audience members are strongly encouraged to root for their favorite poems as cuts will be made after every round. Cheering, yelling, booing, hissing, whistling, and good-natured heckling are welcome and expected.

Indigo Moor reads at Poetry Night Reading Series in Davis TOMORROW!
Thursday night the Poetry Night Reading Series will proudly welcome back poet Indigo Moor. He will be performing on Thursday, November 17th at 8PM at the John Natsoulas Gallery at 521 1st Street in Davis.
Indigo Moor is an award-winning poet and the author two acclaimed books of poetry. His work has appeared in a number of anthologies and journals including the Xavier Review, LA Review, Poetry Now, and Suisun Valley Review.
His first book,Tap Root, was published in 2006 byMain Street Rag's Editor's Select Poetry Series. His most recent book of poetry, Through the Stonecutter's Window, was the 2009 winner of the nationally recognized Cave Canem Northwestern University Press Poetry Prize and writing fellowship. He is also the recipient of numerous accolades including the 2005 Vesle Fenstermaker Poetry Prize for Emerging Writers and the 2008 Jack Kerouac Poetry Prize. He has been a finalist for numerous awards, such as the T.S. Eliot Prize, and in 2009 he was nominated for the Pushcart Prize.

I am currently collecting short, first person stories involving heartwarming holiday encounters for an anthology to be published by the non-fiction division of Harlequin in the fall of 2012, A Miracle Under the Tree: Real Stories of Hope, Faith, and the True Meaning of the Season. Stories should be between 1,500-2,000 words in length, feel free to submit longer and I will consider them. Deadline for submission is December 31, 2011. JAZZ AND POETRY TO BENEFIT STANDFOR CHILDREN'S HOME, 11/19
Poet and abstract artist James Humphrey (1939 to 2008) left a large mark on the literary landscape. He published 17 books of poetry and was nominated twice for the Nobel Prize for Literature.
His widow, Norma Humphrey of Sacramento, has organized "Jazz & Poetry Live: The Wonder of This Moment," a tribute to his legacy.
"It will benefit the Stanford Home for Children, honoring my husband's wishes to raise awareness for at-risk youth," she said.
Sacramento poet laureate Bob Stanley will be joined by poets Eve West Bessier, Mary Zeppa and Lawrence Dinkins in readings from Humphrey's works. Accompanying them will be the Brubeck Institute Jazz Quintet. Food and wine samplings will be included in the $25 donation.
The event will begin at 7 p.m. Nov. 19 with a raffle and book sale at California Stage, 2509 R St., Sacramento.

Hello writers and friends of writing! Here are some highlights for the coming week. Stay dry! -Kate

Valerie Fioravanti is offering a multi-genre workshop in Flash Fiction and Creative Nonfiction, beginning Monday, November 14th. The course runs for six weeks, and is limited to six students. If you write in only one genre, but are interested in experimenting with the other, this is the perfect course for you. The word count limit of 1,000 words can be less daunting than a longer story or essay, and you are free to experiment across genres—or not, if you decide it’s not for you. You’ll be able to submit up to five pieces, and at least one revision will be encouraged. We’ll discuss the qualities that makes short work sizzle in both genres, what sets fiction and nonfiction apart, and whether or not such distinctions matter. Flash is a good form for developing writers because economy, purpose, and precision are good skills to bring to larger works in either genre. Katy Brown has won many awards for her poetry from organizations such as the Ina Coolbrith Circle, Berkeley Poets Dinner, and California Chaparral Poets. Her poems have been published in numerous journals, and her workbook Poetry Potions was used in schools for many years. Katy, who lives in Davis, recently retired from a career in Social Work, and is already busy volunteering.
Josh Fernandez is a free-lance journalist, poet and fiction writer who lives in Sacramento. His work has been published all over the US and online in publications such as Spin.com, Sacramento News and Review, Hartford Advocate and San Antonio Current. His first book of poems, Spare Parts and Dismemberment, was published by R.L. Crow this year.
Patricia Killelea is a doctoral student in Native American Studies at UC Davis. She holds an MA in Creative Writing, also from UC Davis.
Originally from the Bay Area, Patricia’s debut collection of poetry, Other Suns, (2011) is available from Swan Scythe Press.
Anna Marie Sprowl is a Sacramento-based poet and spoken-word performer. She has performed at many local venues, including The Show, The Crocker Art Museum, The Guild Theater, and Jazz and Poetry 2010 with the Brubeck Institute Jazz Quintet.

Valerie Fioravanti is offering a multi-genre workshop in Flash Fiction and Creative Nonfiction, beginning Monday, November 14th. The course runs for six weeks, and is limited to six students. If you write in only one genre, but are interested in experimenting with the other, this is the perfect course for you. The word count limit of 1,000 words can be less daunting than a longer story or essay, and you are free to experiment across genres—or not, if you decide it’s not for you. You’ll be able to submit up to five pieces, and at least one revision will be encouraged. We’ll discuss the qualities that makes short work sizzle in both genres, what sets fiction and nonfiction apart, and whether or not such distinctions matter. Flash is a good form for developing writers because economy, purpose, and precision are good skills to bring to larger works in either genre. Outta the Blue Poetry Series event for 2011 held by the gallery. I will
read from my writings for about 1/2 hour first. Then Molly Fisk will
read after me, followed by some Q&A. You may park for free in the
city parking garage right next door, although there should be plenty of
street parking too.
